Thinking about taking on a HH12HR? Here’s some information that might help:
I’ve never done a Hurricane Heat before. Will that be a problem?
It really depends on your physical and mental preparation. The Hurricane Heat is a great way to get familiar with these types of events and the problem-solving skills they require. If you’re comfortable thinking on your feet and have a good training background, you should do fine. Just keep in mind, these events can be tough, and you can’t always prepare for everything the cadre might throw at you. It’s more about how well you can adapt and respond.
How far do I have to run?
You’ll go as far as the Krypteia asks. Each event is different, and there’s no set distance. Sometimes you’ll get to “choose your own adventure,” so the total distance you cover will depend on the choices you make to complete your missions and objectives.
What if I don’t know what to bring? I’ve never done one before.
No worries—when you need to know something, we’ll let you know. One thing you can count on is needing a good ruck that you’re comfortable carrying for at least 12 hours, since that’s how long the event lasts. You’ll also want a reliable way to stay hydrated and enough food to keep you fueled the whole time. While there might be water stations, don’t count on them. Make sure you know what works for you for 12 hours, don’t depend on caffeine, and avoid starting on an empty stomach. Sometimes the Krypteia may decide to limit eating, and you won’t know when or for how long. Always check the event page where everyone meets and chats before the event begins.
This will be my first Spartan event. Will I be ok?
It depends on how prepared you are. Are you just starting out, or have you been training for a while? Your physical and mental background will play a big role in how you do. If you’re ready to face challenges head-on, you’re probably set. If you’re unsure of your abilities, it might be a good idea to focus on training and try a few shorter events before taking on the 12-hour challenge.
I want to do the event with my friend/sister/whoever. Can we stay together like in a race?
While Hurricane Heat events are great for building camaraderie, the HH12HR is more focused on individual missions and pushing your limits. You can choose to stick with someone if you want, but if it causes you to fall behind and miss a time-sensitive task, you might not finish the event.
Do I have to bring gear like in a regular Hurricane Heat?
Yes, you’ll get a gear list, and all items on that list are required for the event.
Can I bring my own food? Will there be time to have a break to eat?
You’ll need to bring your own food and stay fueled throughout the event. It’s self-supported, so plan to eat and hydrate on your own. Eat whenever you get the chance, as the Krypteia won’t announce meal breaks.
Are the 12 hours in a row? Or can I rest for an hour and then do my remaining hours?
Yes, it’s twelve hours straight with no breaks.
If I miss a time hack and don’t finish on time, can I still get a medal or a patch?
Only finishers receive the HH12HR shirt, patch, medal, or tag. If you don’t finish, you won’t receive these items.
Are there photos like at a Spartan Race?
Photos aren’t guaranteed at a HH12HR. If any are taken, they’ll be uploaded to the main page. Sometimes the Krypteia will take and share photos as well.
Although all events are different, generally, what percent is a team, and what percent involves individual tasks?
This varies from event to event, but on average, at least a third of the event is team-based.
Are there general items on the gear list that never change?
Yes.
- All athletes MUST wear a black shirt. It can be a t-shirt, sports bra, tank top, or whatever you prefer, but it must be black.
- 1 Headlamp. It will be dark at the start. (100% Mandatory)
- 1 Black Sharpie Marker
- 1 Ruck/Backpack
- 1 Hydration Unit: You need to carry your own water supply (2L or 3L recommended)
- Bring enough food for 12 hours.
- Ruck weight must be at least 25 lbs for men and 15 lbs for women (before adding hydration and food, so plan accordingly)
- Reflective Safety Vest OR PT Belt
- Multitool
- Duct Tape
Is there a weight requirement to carry in your gear?
Usually, yes. Check your email when the Krypteia sends out the details.
What’s the biggest difference between an HH and a HH12HR?
The Hurricane Heat focuses mostly on teamwork and the idea that you never leave a teammate behind. The 12-hour Hurricane Heat, or HH12HR, sets a higher standard and helps see who’s ready for the Spartan Agoge. It includes both team and individual challenges, but the main focus is on always putting the mission first.
Does HH12HR ever go “urban”?
Anything is possible. Be ready for the terrain or landscape to change at any time.
Can my friend shadow the HH12HR?
No, there are no shadows or spectators at the HH12HR. You’re either participating or not.
Is there a specific backpack I should use?
You can pick your own pack. We recommend something durable that can carry all your gear. A 21L bag works well for most people.
What if I need to go to the bathroom?
Make it quick, as the event keeps moving. If you step away, let someone know so we don’t have to look for you.
Should I wear layered clothing and gloves? I am scared of the cold.
You’ll likely get cold and wet at some point. More clothes can help with warmth but will also get heavier when wet. Dress based on what you know works for you, and be prepared for changing conditions.
Is there any real threat of coming into contact with wildlife?
Yes, sometimes Spartan events are held in the wilderness, and it’s possible to see wildlife like bears, deer, or snakes. Stay alert. Usually, there’s enough activity during setup that animals stay away, but it’s best to be prepared.
Will I need survival skills?
It can be helpful. While you probably won’t need survival skills to get through the event, the Krypteia might teach or test you on some. You’ll get all the essential info you need in your gear list email, which should arrive within two weeks of the event.
Is there somewhere I can research past events or talk to people who have done it before?
Yes. On Facebook, there’s a group that includes people who have completed the Hurricane Heat. Feel free to ask them for advice—they’re happy to help.
I can’t find my city on the Hurricane Heat events. Will my city have a HH or HH12HR?
If your city isn’t listed on the schedule, there isn’t an event planned there right now. Sometimes new events are being organized, but until everything is confirmed, we can’t post a registration link.
Find the events at this link.
I heard a rumor that there may be an HH or HH12HR in my city. Is it true?
Spartan only posts confirmed events. When everything is ready, the event will be listed on the website. Use the Canada Website and official Spartan Race channels for the most accurate information.
